NASA Invites Elementary Students and Their Families to a Free Inside Look at the Newest Earth Observing Satellite, NPP!
11.16.11

GREENBELT, Md. -- NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Md. will host this month's Sunday Experiment on Sunday, November 20 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. EST. It's a free afternoon of eye-opening, hands-on activities spotlighting NASA's newest Earth-observing satellite, the NPOESS Preparatory Project (NPP).

NPP is a multi-faceted satellite that was launched on October 28, 2011 to help meteorologists improve weather forecasts and advance Earth and climate science. With its five instruments, NPP will measure the Earth's atmospheric and sea surface temperatures, humidity and pressure profiles, land and ocean biological activity and cloud and aerosol properties.

Students will get the chance to watch a video presentation of a Delta-II rocket blasting NPP into the night sky. A speaker will be on hand to talk all things NPP. The satellite's mascot, a polar bear that represents climate science, will also be introduced at the NPPy coloring station. Students can get creative making their own models of NPPy the Polar Bear or models of the NPP satellite.

As always, the Visitor’s Center Science on a Sphere theater will offer insight to Goddard’s cutting edge science and research.

The Sunday Experiment, held the third Sunday of each month from September through May, features activities showcasing Goddard's world-renowned science and engineering research and technological developments. Families leave inspired by the activities, wowed by the scientists and engineers, and excited about Goddard's revolutionary research and technology.

In addition to celebrating all things science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the Sunday Experiment celebrates major science missions that are managed by NASA Goddard and set to launch in the near future. "

The Sunday Experiment is a place where children and adults alike can discover the excitement of Goddard through fun and engaging hands-on activities," said Emilie Drobnes, of NASA Goddard, founder of Sunday Experiment.

For more information on the Sunday Experiment, visit Goddard's Visitor Center Web page: http://www.nasa.gov/centers/goddard/visitor/events/index.html

Long Term Project

The "Patent Letter" was due yesterday. All I was expecting was a signature somewhere on the assignment paper showing the parent has seen it. Please turn this in as soon as possible.

The conversions are due tomorrow. For this I would like to see the statistics (data tables) paper clipped to the loose leaf paper where you have solved for mean median and mode. Turn these into me first thing in the morning paper clipped to the assignment paper. I will check them and give them back before you go home.

Tonight's homework is in your textbook #8-20 evens only (do not do 9, 11, 13, etc.)

We will have math FAST testing tomorrow get plenty of rest tonight. Homework will be due the next regular class day. Pyramids are due the 24th, no matter what day I see you.

NOTE.... be sure to put your name on the pyramids!!!

If you had already planned a family event for Friday I will excuse you from the day and send home missing work, just ask.

Friday, October 14, 2011

IMPORTANT!!!!!

Today the long term quarter one project was sent home. The first thing that is due is the parent letter. All I want is for your parent to sign the paper to signify that they know I sent it home. Please work on this assignment a little at a time. It is important for you to do your best. This will count as a test grade. Yes, it counts as a test grade! This is an easy way for the test grade average to be improved. Do you best... ask questions if you don't understand something. Use the newspaper. I went on www.washingtonpost.com to get my statistics.

Today's classes;
15 students were missing homework in one class and 16 in the other... let's do better tomorrow!

A concern of mine, when the children come into class they are not reading the board for instructions, even after I remind them. This is where they will find important information they need to know. Also, I am finding that students are not bringing a math journal and an assignment journal with them to class. These two items will make their lives so much more organized. The assignment journal is where they will write what there assignments are whereas the math journal is where they will do all their class work, notes, and homework.

Fingerprinting office
Thanks to all the parents that came out in all the weather last night. We had a good turn out for Back To School Night. I have made a note to send home that quickly summarizes what we spoke of last night. I will also post it here once I check it for typos. I think the thing we need to keep in back of our minds... Will I be able to chaperone NorthBay? Go ahead and try to get fingerprinted now so you are ready when the time comes. I will be talking to the PTO about scheduling a time to try to bring the fingerprinting office here.

Happy last week of summer break:( I hope everyone has enjoyed themselves and looks forward to what the 2011 - 2012 school year has to offer. I have spent my summer with the kids at Gma's house on the lake, while dad has spent his summer recovering from a major back surgery. We will be moving into the new house on Saturday, whew, just in time for school to start.

I have taken a new position at Port Towns ES. I will be teaching 6th grade math this coming year. YAY!! Back to what I enjoy and what I'm comfortable with. Wow those 1st graders last year were a hand full. Can't wait to get at those 6ht graders! I also look forward to working with a new team.

A new school, a new town, a new house, wow what great opportunities.
