Today's classes;
15 students were missing homework in one class and 16 in the other... let's do better tomorrow!
A concern of mine, when the children come into class they are not reading the board for instructions, even after I remind them. This is where they will find important information they need to know. Also, I am finding that students are not bringing a math journal and an assignment journal with them to class. These two items will make their lives so much more organized. The assignment journal is where they will write what there assignments are whereas the math journal is where they will do all their class work, notes, and homework.

Thanks to all the parents that came out in all the weather last night. We had a good turn out for Back To School Night. I have made a note to send home that quickly summarizes what we spoke of last night. I will also post it here once I check it for typos. I think the thing we need to keep in back of our minds... Will I be able to chaperone NorthBay? Go ahead and try to get fingerprinted now so you are ready when the time comes. I will be talking to the PTO about scheduling a time to try to bring the fingerprinting office here.

Happy last week of summer break:( I hope everyone has enjoyed themselves and looks forward to what the 2011 - 2012 school year has to offer. I have spent my summer with the kids at Gma's house on the lake, while dad has spent his summer recovering from a major back surgery. We will be moving into the new house on Saturday, whew, just in time for school to start.
I have taken a new position at Port Towns ES. I will be teaching 6th grade math this coming year. YAY!! Back to what I enjoy and what I'm comfortable with. Wow those 1st graders last year were a hand full. Can't wait to get at those 6ht graders! I also look forward to working with a new team.
A new school, a new town, a new house, wow what great opportunities.

Banking
This is another game idea to get those ELL students talking to their peers. The materials are minimal!! Each team needs only two number cubes (dice). They will have to compute math mentally and keep the score on paper. The first person rolls the dice and adds the two together to get the sum. This number they must keep in their head! No paper and pencil for such easy adding. The player may choose to roll again. Each time adding the total to the previous sum. Here's the catch... if a one is rolled the player looses everything in their head and its the next players turn... second catch, if the player rolls snake eyes (two ones) the player looses everything in the "bank" (on the score sheet) and it's the next players turn. When the player decides they have tempted fate long enough the player then chooses to write down that round's score, dollar amount, in the "bank" and the next player gets his try. Encourage the players to discuss not only their totals but also the reasoning to stop their turn or to move foward rolling again. As always, sentence frames will help the students use complete sentences. Word banks will also expand the students' use of the language.
